Let’s Talk Africa

Lets Talk Africa 2013Let’s Talk Africa is a free one-day event aimed at anyone interested in working in Africa, especially working professionals, graduates and final year students. There will be keynote speeches by CEOs and representatives of several major corporations based in Africa.

The theme of the event is “Africa Rising”. This reflects the numerous opportunities created by the current economic climate in Africa. In spite of the global economic downturn, African countries are thriving – for example, seven of the top 12 fastest-growing economies in 2013 are in Africa.  Topics include:

  • Employment opportunities in key African countries
  • Business start-up opportunities
  • Moving back home
  • Networking for success

Student or recent graduate? Great business idea but need funding?

RBS enterprise_1The RBS EnterprisingU competition has launched for the second year, with £40,000 worth of prizes!  Created by Find Invest Grow (FIG) and sponsored by the RBS Group, it offers you a platform to “road-test” your business ideas, while building the framework for a professional business plan.  Find them on Facebook and Twitter.  The competition will close at midnight on 19 July 2013.

Voluntary work

International Citizen Service (ICS) offers you the chance to use the knowledge and skills from your course to help fight global poverty, whilst also developing valuable skills for employment.  ICS is the UK’s leading global volunteering programme that supports young people from all backgrounds to make a real difference to global poverty. Funded by the Department for International Development, we’re building a generation of global citizens.

Restless Development is the youth-led development agency. We know that young people have the energy, commitment and skills to solve some of the world’s biggest problems.

  • WHAT  On a 12-week placement, you’ll work with young people on exciting and valuable programmes. You could be:
  1. Part of a business enterprise programme, supporting young people to develop the skills needed to run their own business
  2. Running dance4life workshops, which involve using dance and music to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS
  3. Running fun and interactive careers fairs for young people
  4. Running computer training sessions for young people who have limited access to IT equipment

When you return to the UK, you’ll be involved in exciting social action projects to raise awareness of the issues you encountered on placement overseas. Continue reading

Lets Talk Africa/Africa First

Let’s talk Africa event took place on 30 November 2012 at the Downing college, University of Cambridge, and you can find resources from the event at  www.letstalkafrica.org.  The event aimed  to provide a platform where University students: both post- and undergraduates, could hear about opportunities inherent in Africa and how they can explore them. Recruiters also attended the summit.

Entrepreneurial tips?

Often students have ideas or projects they would love to take further but have no easy or affordable access to the skills to do so. StuConnect will provide access to skilled students from Universities across the country happy to provide the necessary expertise. Jelly Event

What is Jelly?
Jelly is a casual co-working event for freelancers, people working at home or running a small business; it’s an opportunity to meet new like-minded people once a month, with laptops  in a social environment.

What happens at a Jelly?
Jelly is a mixture of work, chat, sharing of tips and ideas, maybe the opportunity to work on collaborative projects.

How did it start?
Jelly started in the USA and has become increasingly popular in the UK with over 30 Jelly events all ready started and more on the horizon.

What does it cost to attend?
Jelly is a free event, however, take some money for tea/coffee  and lunch.

When is it?
Crystal Palace Jelly launched in January 2011 and events are held on the third Thursday of every month. You will need to book your ticket each month to attend, and tickets are released 2 weeks before each event and close the day before. Ticket are on a first-come first-served basis.
